Fast healthcare a supplier of quality clinical training courses has adopted the EasiLearning Train and Track system to enable management to track trainees using their training courses without the need for any additional IT infrastructure. According to Richard Norrie, Managing Director of Fast healthcare, Train and Track will make their courses accessable to many more organisations. ”With Train and Track, organisations who do not have or prefer not to use a Learning Management System are now able to deploy our courses and have the ability to produce records of trainees, their scores and dates of completion. Many get bogged down in complex IT infrastructure when they just want to train their staff and produce records for training and clinical governance purposes. Of course, we will continue to offer SCORM versions for those organisations that prefer this approach.”

Peter Mehta, Director of EasiLearning Ltd, commented “We look forward to shortly being able to offer Fast healthcare clinical training courses in Train and Track. The availablity of quality courses like those offered by Fast healthcare in this format will be welcomed by many of our customers”

According to an article by Steve Ford in the Nursing Times, about a third of nurses have been self funding their own post registration training in key subjects such as Health and Safety, Child Protection and BLS. This information has come to light following a survey conducted by the Royal College of Nursing.

Peter Mehta of EasiLearning said “We are aware of a number of enquiries in particular for our online anaphylaxis refresher training from individual nurses. Fortunately the cost of completing an online course is very low – probably less than the petrol costs to drive into work. Nonetheless, I was suprised to learn from the RCN survey that an many as a third of nurses are self funding some of their training. Most of our courses are commissioned by the employer and can be accessed from anywhere as long as the individual has access to a PC and a printer. The employer can track the training either via our web Train and Track system or through an LMS such as AT Learning, Training Tracker or the nLMS”

An EasiLearning course has been successfully tested in the nLMS. The National Learning Management System (nLMS) is a way for all NHS employees with a staff record on ESR to access elearning courses written for the NHS. This means that all EasiLearning courses may now be commissioned to be available to an NHS organisation with the NHS.

EasiLearning courses are already running on a variety of other commercially provided LMS systems including Moodle.

Some of our courses may require to be accessed via trainees who do not have a staff record on the ESR e.g. community pharmacists, dentists etc. In this case our Train and Track web based system remains the preferred option as this allows anyone with access to the Internet to complete the training and be tracked by management without the need for any IT system other than a PC and a printer.

According to at article by Karl Mansfield in the Aberdeen Press and Journal published today, a date has now been set for an inquiry into C. diff deaths. Relatives of 18 people who died in a hospital bug outbreak said yesterday that a public inquiry into the deaths now seemed a “reality” after a start date for the hearing was set.
Scottish Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon ordered the inquiry into the Clostridium difficile deaths in Vale of Leven Hospital at Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, last year. C. diff was blamed for the deaths of nine patients and was said to be a contributory factor in the deaths of another nine. A total of 55 patients at the hospital were affected by the bug between December 2007 and June 2008.

According to a recent article in the Guardian by Charles Arthur, many NHS and government sites may be exposed to a serious security risk. Microsoft’s Internet Explorer version 6 running on Windows XP has been broken into by Chinese hackers. Microsoft does not appear to be concerned because IE version 6 is now ‘old hat’ having been released way back in 2000 – but an estimated 750,000 PCs across the NHS still have this combination of browser and operating system.

One commentator Ed Bott, a blogger on ZDnet, accuses any IT department still running this combination of being guilty of malpractice. Just as well none of our NHS systems contain any sensitive data!!!

There is always resistance to change. Why do something new when the old way works just fine? Delivery of clinical training is a case in point. Subjects like anaphylaxis updates, showing nurses how to use the ‘MUST’ tool and explaining a nurse’s persoonal responsibilities when handing out medicines under a PGD are good examples. Typically these subjects are taught by clinical trainers in the classroom which means that nurses have to travel to a training centre. However, these are knowledge based topics and can be effectively taught using e-learning courses such as those available from EasiLearning Ltd.

In any organisation, obtaining budget for new projects is difficult. In an envirnoment like the NHS where there are always more worthwhile projects than available budget, this exercise is always difficult. Clinical training is often delivered by existing staff in a traditional classroom environment and is therefore seen as ‘free’.

While this is technically correct in that budget is not required, it certainly is not free. Staff time does cost and will be represented in an existing budget. Travel costs are also a factor. An analysis of the real costs of training will reveal that the deployment of e-learning can lead to very significant cost savings. Every organisation will be different and rural organisations are likely to see bigger savings than city based ones. However, travelling 2 miles across London for example remains a time consuming activity that is surely better avoided if possible. One Director of Medical calculated that the deployment of EasiLearning’s Anaphylactic Shock saved his PCT the equivalent of 5 full time equivalents. Not only was the budget required for the deployment less than the travel costs, but the real savings were in key front line staff time.

This cartoon illustrates the point:
