Relatives of 18 people who died in a hospital bug outbreak said yesterday that a public inquiry into the deaths now seemed a “reality” after a start date for the hearing was set.
Scottish Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon ordered the inquiry into the Clostridium difficile deaths in Vale of Leven Hospital at Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, last year. C. diff was blamed for the deaths of nine patients and was said to be a contributory factor in the deaths of another nine. A total of 55 patients at the hospital were affected by the bug between December 2007 and June 2008.
